News and Notes

• This is game number 995 for the scarlet and gray in season No. 102. Newberry has a 412-546-36 record.

• Newberry and Catawba are meeting for the 79th time overall and the 44th time in Salisbury. Catawba won last year’s meeting in double overtime, 37-34, in Newberry.

• Newberry has won four of the last five meetings between the two squads in Salisbury.

• The last meeting in Salisbury was a 27-0 Newberry shutout that was the scarlet and gray’s first shutout of Catawba since 1992. All but two of Catawba’s possessions ended in an attempt to punt – a fourth down conversion attempt in the fourth quarter failed and the Indians still had possession of the ball when the game ended.

• Newberry’s strong defense will look for another good showing this week, as Catawba ranks 133rd nationally in total offense (310.3 yards/game) and 139th in scoring offense (15.5 points/game).

• Catawba has been an up-and-down team early this year, losing to national power West Georgia in week one and beating up on Davidson in week two. Then after an impressive win at Carson-Newman in week three, the Catawba Indians were shut out at home by Wingate in week four.

• Constrastingly, Newberry has been very consistent, with strong defensive performances all year and one of the top rushing offenses in the nation.

• Another spotlight should be ball security for both sides, as the humidity and rain over the past two weeks is not projected to subside until Saturday.

• This is one of only two games for the Wolves on a natural grass surface this season, and will be the second straight game on the Catawba grass.

• Newberry forced seven three-and-outs in the Tusculum game and has forced 20 in the last three games.
