WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines lost their first game of the season to the Ridge Spring-Monetta Trojans, 39-14.

“I told anyone who would listen that the Trojans were a different animal, way better than the first four opponents,” said head coach Charlie Jenkins. “Ridge Spring-Monetta is a perennial playoff team and traditionally gets better and better as the season goes along.”

The Trojans made the first touchdown of the night on a 32 yard run in the first quarter. They continued their good luck in the second quarter with two more touchdowns. The first was a one yard run with seven minutes still on the clock. The second came from a 72 yard pass play. This left the score 19-0 by halftime.

Coming into the third quarter the Wolverines took down some of their lead. West Jenkins made a six yard touchdown run with six minuets on the clock, but the conversion was no good and the score stood 19-6. However, the Trojans came back at the end of the third quarter with a 14 yard scamper and increased their lead to 25-6.

The Trojans started out the fourth quarter with another touchdown on a 40 yard run. However, the Wolverines answered with their own with Austin Jenkins making a 40 yard pass to his brother West Jenkins. The brothers also made a successful two point conversion making the score 32-14. The Trojans made the final score of the night with a five yard run, leaving the score 39-14.

“The Trojans were simply too big and too fast. That is the kind of team we will have to beat in order to make a run in the playoffs,” Charlie Jenkins said. “And to beat a team like that we have to be almost perfect, and we were not Saturday.”

The game was originally to be played Friday night, but was postponed to Saturday due to the weather.

“I was very happy that our fans turned out on a Saturday night and stayed to the end, even though the weather got a little nasty,” Jenkins said. “I just wish we could have put on a better show.”
