DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — The Mercy College Mavericks defeated Newberry College Wolves by a score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

Newberry is now 1-6 on year while Mercy College has won four in a row and going one game above .500 on year with a 4-3 record.

Each team scored a goal in the first half. The first goal, scored by Mercy’s Giana Magosin came early in the game at the 1:49 minute mark from a pass at the 15 yard line, just outside the circle from Jackie Ballin. Newberry scored 15 minutes later when Courtlyn Warren took a shot that got deflected to Hannah Collins who took a shot and put it in the back of the net.

Ten minutes into the second half Meghan Smiga scored a goal of her own when Collins connected a pass with Smiga who put the Wolves up 2-1. Newberry started to play more defense after taking the lead and only took seven shots for the rest of the game.

The Mavericks then scored at the 55:58 minute mark when Jackie Ballin took a chance with a pass down the middle of the field and connected with Micaela Belz who put it in the back of the net.

With the game tied 1-1, each team was doing anything they can to score. The Mavericks had three shots and three penalty corners when Kimberly Sands scored her second goal of the year off multiple saves/rebounds by Wolves goal keeper Dakota Elzy.

The Wolves then went into attack mode but could not find the back of the net. Warren had three shots in the final eight minutes. Each shot was saved by Mercy’s goal keeper Julia Amell who tallied 12 saves on the day.

The Wolves had plenty of opportunities as the team took 26 shots, 15 on goal and added 25 penalty corners. Elzy tallied five saves to finish out the day.
