WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines travel to Orangeburg County tonight to play the North High School Eagles.

Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said this will be Whitmire’s first trip to an Orangeburg County School. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.

The Wolverines have an overall record of 2-0, compared to the Eagles 0-2. The Eagles defeated the Wolverines 26-15 last year.

“The team is in good spirits. We are 2-0, but we have ‘been there and done that.’ We were in this same spot last year. We started 2-0 and everybody was singing our praises and we slipped up against North,” Jenkins said. “We have set our goals higher this year, but we are aware that the last time Whitmire started the season 3-0 was in 1999 when they defeated Mid-Carolina, Ware Shoals and Thornwell, so going 3-0 is our goal this week.”

Jenkins said that the Eagles have good speed and have two good players at tailback and fullback.

“They had a lot of success last week moving their tailback to quarterback and running the ‘wildcat’ offense,” he said.

So far this season the Eagles have fallen to Branchville and Bethune-Bowman.

“During their (Eagles) game against Branchville, they were beating them by two touchdowns at the half, but they ran out of gas and lost,” Jenkins said.

During practice this week, the Wolverines have put emphasis on tackling and secondary awareness on defense. On offense, Jenkins said they have worked on hitting the holes quicker.

“We have been spending too much time dancing around instead of hitting the hole as soon as we have an opening,” he said.

This will be the Wolverines’ second away game of the season, and an hour and a half trip to North High School.

“We feel good about our routine for a road game. It’s good to get into the regular season groove. Everybody knows what to expect each week,” Jenkins said.
