ROCK HILL — The sixth-seeded Newberry College women’s tennis team was defeated 5-0 by third-seeded Tusculum on Thursday in the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship quarterfinals at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

The Pioneers (18-7) won all three doubles matches over the Wolves to begin play by scores of 8-2, 9-7, and 8-4, respectively. Lucia Davia and Kelly McManus pushed the Pioneers at No. 2 doubles for the 9-7 final.

Tusculum needed just two wins in singles play to clinch the match and they came first from Franziska Funke at No. 2 over Amanda Carrillo 6-2, 6-3, and at No. 4 as Africa Mota defeated Davia 6-0, 6-3. Matches at No. 1, 3, 5, and 6 singles went unfinished.

The Wolves finish their season 15-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play. Newberry graduates two seniors as McManus and Elizabeth Williamson finished their Wolves tennis careers. Williamson finishes her career with 104 total wins (52 singles, 52 doubles).

McManus wraps up her career with 50 total victories (22 singles, 28 doubles).

The Wolves finish their season 15-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
