GREENVILLE, TENN. — The Newberry women’s tennis team was defeated by South Atlantic Conference-leading Tusculum 8-1 Saturday morning at the Nichols Tennis Complex in Greenville, Tenn.

Newberry (12-7, 4-3 SAC) was swept by Tusculum (12-4, 7-0 SAC) in doubles play. The Pioneers are ranked No. 9 in the Southeast Region and No. 39 in the nation.

Elizabeth Williamson won her 15th singles match of the season at No. 1 singles, edging out a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory. Lucia Davia dropped a hard fought 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 4 singles.

The Newberry women’s tennis team was edged by Carson-Newman 5-4 in a close South Atlantic Conference match Friday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Newberry (12-6, 4-2 SASC) started the match by taking two out of three doubles matches over Carson-Newman (5-6, 4-3 SAC). Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo won their 12th doubles match in a row with an 8-5 win at No. 1. Rebeca Martinez and Marta Gomar recorded an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Williamson scored her fifth conference victory with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles. Carrillo moved to 6-0 in SAC play with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Carson-Newman won the next four singles matches to earn the 5-4 match victory. Martinez pushed her match to a third set, falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

Newberry will host Wingate (9-1, 6-0 SAC) at the Cayce Tennis Center on Thursday. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
