CAYCE – The Newberry men’s tennis team was defeated by defending South Atlantic Conference Tournament champions Queens University of Charlotte 8-1 Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis Center.

Queens (6-1, 4-0 SAC) swept through doubles play against Newberry (11-3, 3-1 SAC). Jordan Monosky and Edison Ambarzumjan lost an 8-5 decision at No. 1, the Wolves’ closest doubles match of the afternoon.

Ambarzumjan earned his tenth win of the season at No. 1 singles, notching Newberry’s only point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The Royals swept through the other singles matches in straight sets.

The Newberry men’s tennis team got back on track Saturday against South Atlantic Conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne, winning 7-2 at Hickory High School.

Newberry (12-3, 4-1 SAC) swept Lenoir-Rhyne (7-7, 1-4 SAC) in doubles play to start the match. Jordan Monosky and Edison Ambarzumjan won 8-3 at the No. 1 slot, and Nikhil Mannepalli and Angel Pizarro were victorious 9-7 at No. 2. The Wolves capped off doubles play with a 9-8 win by Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins at the No. 3 position.

The Wolves won all of its singles matches in straight sets. Amarzumjan scored a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, while Monosky grabbed a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2. Mannepalli won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, before Angel Pizzaro gave Newberry its final point with an 8-5 win at No. 4 singles.

Newberry will travel to Tennessee this weekend, facing Tusculum (9-4, 4-1 SAC) and Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-2 SAC). The match against the Pioneers is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
