NEWBERRY — After being named the 2016-17 South Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year, freshman Marshall Lange of the Newberry College men’s basketball team has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Lange earns Rookie of the Year honors after being named the South Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year during his first year as a member of the scarlet and gray.

Lange, who was selected to the five-member SAC All-Freshman Team, averaged 12.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game this season. He scored 20 points three times, including a career-high 26 points against Mars Hill on Feb. 4.

The freshman from High Point, N.C., swiped 32 steals this season, which ranks 16th in the SAC. Lange finished with a 45.4 field goal percentage, including 37.5 percent from three-point range.

Lange led Newberry in scoring in four contests, starting off his Newberry career by leading the team against Erskine in the season opener with 21 points. Lange saw action in 28 games, while drawing a starting nod in 10 and averaged nearly 21 minutes per contest.
