NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team pounded out 29 hits and scored 32 runs in a sweep of Benedict Sunday at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves won game one 11-3 and took the nightcap 21-1, both in five innings.

Newberry struck quickly in the opener, scoring two runs on two hits. Mryanda Dills notched her first home run of the season to straight away center in the second. Newberry’s big inning game in the third, scoring five runs on four hits. Benedict broke up Devon Morrison’s no-hit bid in the fourth with a single.

The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the fifth before Newberry scored two runs in the bottom of the frame for the 11-3 final score.

Natalie Willis led the Wolves, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Christina Linton and Dills collected two hits apiece. Haley Simonds and Linton both notched two RBIs.

Morrison recorded the win in the circle, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs.

The Wolves saved the fireworks for game two, scoring 21 runs on 16 hits. Newberry did its greatest damage in the third, scoring nine runs on five hits after having seven runners cross the plate in the first two frames. Benedict did not score a run until the top of the fifth as Tandreanna Conyers broke up the shutout with a single.

Newberry had a total of 19 players in the box score, led by Simonds’ 3-for-3 effort at the plate. She notched four RBIs and three runs scored. Linton, Daphne Peyton and Morgan Sweeny all recorded multiple hits for Nebwerry. Linton also hit her second home run of the season. Ten Wolves recorded RBIs.

Emily Marchbanks recorded the win for Newberry, allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings. Simonds and Megan Shifflett saw their first action in the circle this season, each tossing an inning.

Newberry will travel to North Greenville (9-7) for a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
