NEWBERRY — Newberry College junior guard Nicola Handreck (Heywood, Victoria, Australia) has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday morning.

It is the first SAC Player of the Week award for Handreck in her Newberry career.

A preseason second-team all-conference selection prior to this season, Handreck has started all 22 games for Newberry. She averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last week to help the Wolves earn two SAC victories.

The most impressive of the two wins came in a 56-52 victory over 8th ranked Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon when Handreck notched her fourth double-double of the season in a 22-point, 10-rebound performance. It was just the second loss of the season for the conference leading Lady Railsplitters.

Earlier in the week, Nicola led all scorers with 21 points in the Wolves’ 61-41 victory on the road over the Catawba Indians. The guard added to her stat line pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, and picking up three steals.

In four February games, Handreck is averaging 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, helping Newberry go 3-1 in the month.
