NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy faced Richard Winn Academy on Tuesday night in front of a large home crowd.

This was the last home game of the regular season, and it was also the night that seniors were honored.

The seniors included Leigha Harbert, Natashia Ruff, Bremen Sawyer and Meagan Bedenbaugh for the Lady Eagles.

The boys’ team will bid farewell to Darius Williams, Tabb French, Tyrese Taylor and Landen York. The only senior cheerleader was Alexis Morris.

The Lady Eagles lost to Richard Winn 51-15. The boys’ team won 41-30.

The girls played well in the first quarter, and were only down 10-2, but turnovers and missed shot opportunities led to the blowout.

Amber Suber led Newberry with six points and 11 rebounds, followed by Michelle Brown with four points. Harbert added three points and Bedenbaugh finished with two points.

The boys played one of their best games of the season. Head coach Scott Gardner was pleased with the effort on both ends of the floor.

Newberry opened an early lead and never looked back. Richard Winn cut the lead to seven in the second half, but the home team answered and finished the game off at the free throw line.

Newberry was led by Williams, who finished with 16 points. Taylor, Camron Hawkins and Matt Cole each had six points, while York had three points. Andy Lin and French rounded out the scoring with two points each.

Both teams are in action Friday night when the Academy travels to Laurens to close out the regular season. Both teams will play in the region tournament which starts next week.
