JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Senior guard Gerald Evans scored 19 points to surpass the 1,000-point plateau for his Newberry career, but it was not enough as Carson-Newman (12-6, 9-3 SAC) defeated the Newberry (12-6, 7-5 SAC) men’s basketball team 110-91 at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Evans led the team with 19 points and five steals. The senior drove to the lane on Newberry’s first possession of the second half to give him 1,000 points on his career.

The Inglewood, Calif., native currently ranks eighth all time according to available records after 101 career games at Newberry.

Marshall Lange added 15 points and five rebounds. Quaman Burton and James Stepp each contributed 14 points apiece.

Both teams got up and down the court early in the first half, with Newberry taking a 4-2 lead after two minutes of play. It would be the last lead of the afternoon for the Wolves.

Carson-Newman led 13-12 after four early lead changes. Christopher Camper tied the game at 17-17 after his three-point basket.

After the Eagles led 28-24, Carson-Newman went on a 11-2 run to lead 37-26 with eight minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles would go on a 21-4 run that spanned over seven minutes as Newberry would not score a field goal for nearly four minutes over that span.

C-N led Newberry 59-39 at the half. Lange led the Wolves with 10 points. Newberry shot 53.1 percent (17-for-32), but committed 11 turnovers.

Newberry began the second half on a 6-0 run. After a pair of Eagle free throws, the Wolves responded with a 5-0 spurt that cut the C-N lead to 65-53. D.J. Copeland knocked home a three to trim the lead to single digits with 12:28 to play. Stepp was fouled on a layup that pulled Newberry within 85-74 at the 9:22 mark.

It would be the last Newberry field goal for over five minutes as Malik Abraham netted back-to-back threes to answer the Wolves’ spurt. Carson-Newman went on an 11-0 run to lead 100-79 with five minutes remaining and never looked back.

Newberry outscored the Eagles by one in the second half, 52-51. The Wolves also committed just one turnover in the second half. Carson-Newman out-rebounded Newberry 44-25 and drained 16 threes. Newberry’s 30 three-point attempts are a season-low.

The Eagles shot 59.4 percent (41-for-69) from the floor on the afternoon compared to 48.6 percent (35-for-72) for Newberry. Abraham and Charles Clark both poured in 28 points to lead Carson-Newman. Sawyer Williams netted 26 points.

Newberry returns home to Eleazer Arena to face No. 3 Queens (17-1, 11-1 SAC) on Wednesday. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. The Royals defeated the Wolves 104-86 on Nov. 22.
