AUGUSTA, Maine — Newberry College alumnus Matt Campbell of Rome, N.Y., picked up his first win as a professional golfer earlier this week with a one-shot victory in the 2015 Charlie’s Maine Open on Tuesday.

Campbell shot a -7 round in the second round of the tournament to vault to the top of the leaderboard and win the event with a 131 (-9). In the second round, Campbell bogeyed the third hole, then rattled off eight birdies in the final 15 holes to clinch a win.

The win at the Maine Open is Campbell’s first professional win after many tries. He was a 2012 GCAA/PING All-American Honorable Mention in his senior season. Campbell completed his career as the Newberry record-holder for all-time rounds played with 107 career rounds and a stroke average of 73.71, which ranks second in school and South Atlantic Conference history.

He was the 2012 South Atlantic Conference individual champion and was the 2011 SAC Golfer of the Year after he earned all-SAC honors in all four of his collegiate seasons. He was named GCAA/PING all-region in 2011 and 2012.
