NEWBERRY — Newberry College senior Madison Darby-McClure has been named to the 2016 Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Darby-McClure is the 23rd Academic All-American in Newberry College history and second this season, following in the footsteps of Sam Hall (football, first team). She is the third volleyball student-athlete to receive Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA.

The award takes into account both academic achievement and athletic accomplishments when selecting Academic All-America teams.

“Madison exemplifies what it truly means to be a student-athlete. This award is a direct reflection of her insatiable desire to acquire knowledge and pursue excellence on the court. We are extremely proud of her efforts this season and throughout her collegiate career,” said head coach Todd Hay.

Darby-McClure played in all 32 matches and ranked second on the team with 318 kills and 2.72 kills per set. Her .273 hitting percentage was second on the team and tied for ninth in the South Atlantic Conference.

She was named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for the events of Sept. 27 to Oct. 3 where she averaged 4.20 kills per set and a .493 hitting percentage over three matches. Her best match this season was in a 3-2 win Nov. 11 against Queens University of Charlotte, notching a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs.
