NEWBERRY — Junior Alyssa Ortega has been named to the 2016 ECAC DII Women’s Soccer All-Star Team the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced.

In the 77 years since its inception, the ECAC has emerged as the nation’s largest Conference, ranging in location from Maine to Georgia, and westerly to Missouri. In 2015-16, the ECAC hosted nearly 100 championships in men’s and women’s sports as the sponsors of over 5,800 varsity teams and 111,000 student-athletes.

Ortega, who hails from Venice, Calif., notched 15 goals on the season, which has her tied for first in school history and pegged for third in the conference.

Ortega started in all 19 games of the season for Newberry and has led the team in minutes played with 1,590. She registered two hat tricks on the season in wins against Brevard and Bob Jones. Her 31 points overall on the season were good for third amongst conference players. The 18 points in conference games put her in second place.

Her nine conference goals were second in the league. Newberry has a record of 7-1 in games in which the junior scores a goal. Her SOG percentage for the year sits at .559.

Ortega was also named to the South Atlantic Conference First-Team All Conference earlier this year. Adding to her awards, the forward was named by the athletic department as the Chick-fil-A Student-Athlete of the Month presented by Sodexo for October 2016.
