NEWBERRY — The Newberry High School Bulldogs will face the Emerald High School Vikings tonight in the second round of playoff action.

The Bulldogs are going into tonight’s game after defeating the Indian Land Warriors 35-6 last week.

Newberry Football Coach Phil Strickland praised the Vikings, whom he says are a very athletic team that is very balanced on offense.

“They run and throw the ball well, so we’ve got our work cut out for us. We’ve got to be geared up to stop some of the things that they do. Last week, I was worried about how the kids would react coming back from a three week break. But the kids went out there and played well,” Strickland said.

Offensively and defensively, Strickland said the team is looking good. Strickland’s main focus this week is not giving up big plays and creating a game plan that will bring home a win for the Bulldogs.

“We’re just happy to be in the second round of the playoffs,” he said. “We’re just proud of our kids and after graduating 35 seniors, nobody gave us much of a chance this year. We’re just real proud of the way the guys have worked in the off season and the way they’ve been playing. Let’s just hope we come away with another victory.”
