NEWBERRY — The Newberry College volleyball team (20-11) swept Catawba (16-13) 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-22) for the second time in as many days in the quarterfinals of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship Tuesday night at Eleazer Arena.
Logan Hayward registered a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Madison Darby-McClure added nine kills, while Alexis Bryant chipped in eight. Maggie Marsh posted a double-double of 35 assists and 11 digs. Natalie Willis collected 12 digs.
The first set was a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than three points the entire set. Darby-McClure had back-to-back kills and then an attack error gave Newberry the 27-25 set one win.
Newberry led 8-4 in set two and forced Catawba to call a timeout. Newberry continued to apply pressure and led 18-11 to force another Catawba timeout. The Wolves controlled the second set the rest of the way for the 25-15 set victory.
Newberry opened up a 10-6 lead in the third set. Catawba tied up the set at 13-13 and ran out to a 20-18 lead. Toni-Anne Whitlow notched back-to-back kills, giving the Wolves a 21-20 lead. After Catawba tied the set at 22-22, Bryant’s kill put Newberry in front and forced a Catawba timeout. Marsh pushed the ball to the floor for the game-winning kill.
Alex Hopper had nine kills for Catawba. Rachel Stanford dished out 31 assists and Meredith Furr posted 19 digs.
Newberry advances to the SAC Volleyball Championship semifinals to faceoff against No. 2 seeded Lincoln Memorial. Newberry split two regular season meetings against the Lady Railsplitters. The Wolves will play in the first semifinal on Friday night at 4:00 p.m. at Wingate University.
