NEWBERRY — Senior quarterback Raleigh Yeldell has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performance in Newberry’s 53-14 win over Lenoir-Rhyne that clinched at least a share of the Wolves’ first SAC championship since 2008.

The Edgefield native was 35-for-46 for 428 yards and four touchdowns through the air despite being taken out of the game with 1:55 to play in the third quarter. He led Newberry to a school-record 729 yards of offense, the ninth-most in Division II this season, and a SAC record 39 first downs to break a record that had stood since 1992.

Yeldell spread the ball around to 10 different receivers, seven of which had 25 or more receiving yards. He became Newberry’s single-season passing leader and now has 2,834 this season, including over 1,500 yards during the month of October.

With his 23 rushing yards and one score on the ground, he surpassed 3,000 yards of total offense during the season to rank second in school history for a single season and is now the only player in school history to pass for 5,000 yards and rush for 1,500.

Yeldell is now ranked second in Division II with a .703 completion percentage this season. He ranks third among all active Division II players in career completion percentage (.663) and eighth in total offense (6,754 yards) among players with at least 4,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing. He has captained the Newberry offense to a No. 2 national ranking in first downs and a No. 10 ranking in passing offense.
