BREVARD, N.C. — The Wolves (6-9-1, 3-5-1) tied their highest goal output of the season as they went on the road and defeated Brevard (5-11-1, 0-9) by a final of 6-0. It was the Wolves first conference road win of the season.

Alyssa Ortega’s breakaway in the 37th minute put Newberry up 1-0 after a well-placed pass from teammate Erika Linch. Her second goal of the game on a cross from Linch in the 52nd minute giving her 13 goals on the season.

Ortega then notched her second hat trick in just three games scoring in the 90th minute.

The junior from California is now just one goal short of tying the team record for goals in a season set by Michelle Calmeyn just last season.

Seniors Marissa Reyna and Lindsay Huber combined to give the Wolves a 2-0 in the 39th minute as a cross from Huber found Reyna, who then put home her first goal of the year.

Newberry dominated play in the first half leading Brevard in shots, 18-1.

Erika Linch, who had already dished out two assists in the match, decided to get in on a little goal scoring of her own tallying the fourth and fifth goals for the Wolves just four minutes apart. The senior from Yuba City, Calif., now has seven goals on the 2016 campaign.

Her 12 shots in the contest tie her for first in school history with the most shots in a single game, a record which has not been reached since 1995, the first year the Newberry soccer program began.

Korina Martinez added her third win of the season in a four save effort. She now has a clean sheet in each one of her wins this year, tying her for 9th in Newberry soccer school history for shutouts in a season.

The Wolves were efficient in the attacking third putting 18 of their 35 shots on frame. The defense held the Tornados to just six shots all night.

Ortega tallied five shots on the night as Lindsay Huber added four shots, and sophomore Sydney Dempsey posted three. Kara Wood, Liz Gutierrez, Marissa Reyna, Morgan Powers, and Sara Silvestro recorded two shots apiece.

Newberry will hit the road again Saturday to take on Mars Hill. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
