Newberry falls in OT to Lincoln Memorial

NEWBERRY – Despite a second half push that sent the game to overtime, The Wolves (3-7-1, 1-5-1) fell to the Railsplitters (7-4, 3-3) in extra time on Monday afternoon.

A cross from Lincoln Memorial and a foul against Newberry in the box, put the game on the foot of Victor Peres.

Just last week vs. Anderson, Newberry goalie Brad Dixon had made a stellar save on a penalty kick in overtime to keep the Wolves’ tied.

This afternoon, it was a different story. The penalty kick by Peres gave the Railsplitters their third conference win of the season. It was his third goal of the year.

The Wolves’ held the Railsplitters scoreless in the second half after Danilo da Silva & George Burne added goals in the first half.

Freshman Quintin Eisner brought the game even on his third goal of the season in the 18th minute, before Burne regained the lead for Lincoln Memorial in the 39th minute on a feed from teammate Felipe de Souza. Eisner lead the team with three shots, all of which were on goal.

Senior Fabrizio Bucco put home a stellar free kick in the 76th minute to tie the game at two. It was Bucco’s first goal of the 2016 campaign.

“We talked with the guys about having a one half at a time mentality. We did a nice job in the second half limiting their chances, and obviously a great goal from Fabrizio. That’s about as well as you can hit it on a free kick,” said Newberry head coach Bryce Cooper.

Newberry was outshot by LMU in the contest 24-10. The Wolves’ put six of their 10 on frame, while the Railsplitters just put eight on goal.

Brad Dixon ended the match with five saves for Newberry. He ranks second in all of Division II soccer in saves per game, and ranks in the top five in saves as well.

“Unfortunate that the game had to end the way it did in overtime, but proud of the effort to come back,” remarked Cooper. Disappointed with the end result because we are so close, but we can’t seem to get over that hump. Just telling the guys to keep plugging away.”

The Wolves’ will host Chowan at Smith Road Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
