Wolves fall to Catawba in five sets

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Newberry College volleyball team (9-10, 6-5 SAC) lost a heartbreaker for the second match in a row, as Catawba (8-8, 6-5 SAC) defeated the Wolves 3-2 (21-25, 25-11, 23-25, 25-14, 16-14) Saturday night at Goodman Gymnasium.

Logan Hayward posted a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs. Madison Darby-McClure collected 13 kills and Andie Meredith added 12. Maggie Marsh also had a double-double with 48 assists and 12 digs. Kensley Jordan collected a team-high 18 digs.

Catawba led 10-9 early in the first set before the Wolves pulled ahead to make it 14-13. The teams traded blows and were tied at 21-21. Newberry rattled off the last four points thanks to four Catawba errors to give Newberry a 25-21 set victory.

Catawba controlled set two from start to finish. Newberry led 5-4 early, but Catawba used a 13-3 run to lead 17-8 as they went on to win the second set, 25-11. Catawba had a match-best .556 attack percentage in the set.

Newberry trailed 8-3 in the third set. The Wolves moved back in front 10-9 thanks to a 7-1 run. Catawba remained close the rest of the set but could never regain the lead. Newberry took set three by a score of 25-23. The Wolves had a game-high 19 kills as a team.

Newberry raced out to an early 5-1 lead to force an early timeout by Catawba. The lead was short lived as Catawba took a 11-9 lead later in set four. The Catawba Indians never looked back as they used a 14-5 run to win the fifth set, 25-14.

Newberry once again got off to a great start thanks to Sydney Diaz’s two service aces. After the Wolves led 8-4, Catawba tied the fifth set at 9-9. Meredith’s kill tied the set at 13-13. The set was tied again at 14-14 but Catawba scored the final two points to win the match.

Audrey Hoffman led Catawba with a match-high 17 kills and six block assists. Rachel Stanford dished out a match-high 53 assists and Meredith Furr collected a match-high 29 digs.

Newberry will travel to Hartsville to take on Coker (9-8, 3-8 SAC) on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The Wolves swept the Cobras earlier this season 3-0 in Newberry.
