NEWBERRY – Thanks to two goals from junior Alyssa Ortega, the Wolves (4-8, 2-4) notched another win at home as they defeated the Anderson Trojans (6-4, 3-4) by a final of 2-0.

In a back and forth game, Ortega put the Wolves’ on the board in the 59th minute on a strike from the top of the box, as Anderson goalkeeper Abby Helm could not corral the ball. It was Ortega’s eighth goal of the season.

In the 78th minute, a shot from the right side of the box from Liz Gutierrez rang off the cross bar, however, teammate Erika Linch got her head on the ball as she sent it to Ortega for the finisher.

Newberry had plenty of chances to add to their lead, but the Anderson defense held strong. In the 67th minute, a corner kick from Lindsay Huber found the head of Linch who had Helm beat, but the Trojans were credited with a team save as their defense kept the ball from crossing the line.

The Wolves’ put up 19 shots in the contest, six of which were on frame. Helm ended the game with three saves for Anderson. Ortega, Gutierrez, and Linch combined for 15 of the Wolves’ shot attempts.

Korina Martinez recorded her second win of the season in a 10 save effort Wednesday afternoon. It was her second clean sheet of the season. The Trojans record 17 shots, 10 of which were on goal.

Newberry hosts another conference game Oct 8 as they face off against Lincoln Memorial. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
