NEWBERRY — Pete Quinn is returning to the bench for the Wolves’ upcoming 2015-16 season as assistant coach.

Quinn has been a college basketball coach on the Division I and II levels for 15 years. He graduated summa cum laude from Pfeiffer University in 2011.

“Pete has been with me previously and understands the system inside and out,” head men’s basketball coach Dave Davis said in making the announcement. “He has been a head coach and is an excellent addition to Newberry basketball.”

Quinn started his career as an assistant coach at Long Island University-Southampton College. There, he was the sole assistant for five seasons before being named head coach in June 2003. He served two seasons as head coach before due to Long Island University’s decision to shut down the undergraduate program at Southampton College.

During his seven-year tenure at Southampton College, his teams led the nation in steals once and won the ECAC Championship for the first time in the program’s history.

Following his departure from Southampton, Quinn was named an assistant coach at Pfeiffer University. There he was named the team’s defensive coordinator. During his first season, the Falcons led Division II in forced turnovers (27.5 per game) and steals (13.1 per game). The following season Pfeiffer led the conference in the same two categories.

Quinn was also responsible for recruiting, individual workouts, film breakdown/editing and video exchange. Along with those duties, he was responsible for redshirt practices, as well as maintaining and updating the men’s basketball web page. Coach Quinn also mentored two-time Division II All American Demario Grier.

He also provided his services to other Pfeiffer athletic programs in baseball (sports information), men’s and women’s soccer (home event management), men’s and women’s cross country (road management), women’s volleyball (home and road event management), softball (sports information and road management) and men’s lacrosse (home event management).

Following his departure from Pfeiffer, Quinn spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey College. During his two years at Belmont Abbey, Quinn was a member of a coaching staff which helped revive a struggling Crusaders’ program. The program won 36 games in two years and defeated the defending Division II national champions.

Quinn returned to Pfeiffer for the 2009-2010 season. That team once again led the conference in steals and forced turnovers, finished with 19 wins, and led the country in scoring. He also mentored another Division II All-American in Chris Woods.

After the 2010 season, Quinn followed his head coach Dave Davis to Newberry. He spent a full season with the Wolves before briefly joining the staff at North Carolina Central University as the director of Basketball Operations. After his short spell in Durham, Quinn returned to Newberry College to assist the men’s basketball program for two seasons.

Since then, he has spent the past three years working at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Southern Maryland after a brief stint as an assistant coach at Lincoln University in Missouri.

St Mary’s Ryken HS is a private Catholic school which competes in one of the strongest high school basketball conferences in the country, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC).

As well as his work in college and high school athletics, Quinn has worked as a freelance sports writer with his main focus being on European football (soccer). His articles have been featured in USA Today, International Business Times UK and the soccer website, World Soccer Talk.
