NEWBERRY — The Newberry College volleyball team (9-8, 6-3 SAC) won its fifth South Atlantic Conference match in a row, sweeping Tusculum (7-6, 4-5 SAC) 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 26-24) Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.
This is the first time the Wolves have won five matches in a row since the 2013-14 season.
The Wolves had a very balanced attack as all six starters tallied at least six kills. Andie Meredith led the Wolves with 11 kills. Madison Darby-McClure had 10 kills and Logan Hayward added nine kills and 12 digs. Toni-Anne Whitlow tallied seven kills while Sidra Triplett and Maggie Marsh added six kills apiece. Marsh dished out 33 assists and tallied 10 digs for a double-double. Mary Siebert had 23 digs to lead the Wolves.
Newberry slowly built a 10-6 advantage in the first set. Tusculum would not go away as they tied the set at 16-16. The Wolves led 24-21 before the Pioneers pulled within one at 24-23. A ball handling error gave Newberry a 25-23 set win.
The Wolves started out on fire, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Tusculum hung around but Newberry maintained a comfortable lead for much of the second set. The Wolves won set two by a score of 25-18. Newberry hit a match-best .405 in the second period.
Newberry once again got off to another great start and led 10-5. The Pioneers mounted a challenge and tied the set at 18-18. The two teams tied the set four separate times at the tail end of the third set. Hayward’s kill tied the set once again at 23-23. Darby-McClure’s massive kill allowed Newberry to sweep the Pioneers as they won set three, 26-24.
The Wolves tallied 49 kills and a .241 attack percentage as a team in the match. Rachel Garnett and Sarah Bouley led Tusculum with 11 kills each. Hallie Zumack dished out 23 assists and Melissa Mazur collected 28 digs.
Newberry returns to the road as they will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to play Queens (9-4, 6-2 SAC). Match time is scheduled to begin next Friday at 7 p.m.
