Belmont hands Wolves loss in women’s soccer


BELMONT, N.C. — Newberry (3-7) had a tough mid-season test last Thursday afternoon against a Belmont Abbey (5-2-1) team who went undefeated in the Conference Carolinas last season, en route to a 16-3-1 overall record.

A late goal by Katelyn Richard put the game away as the Wolves’ couldn’t match the effort in the 2-0 loss.

Richard tallied the goal for the Crusaders to boost their lead in the 84th minute on an assist from Emily Lipinski.

Belmont Abbey struck first in the 37th minute on a goal from Morgan Patton at the right side of the box. Teammate Kate Hennessy added the assist. The Wolves were outshot by the Crusaders 19-11.

Despite just the 11 shots from Newberry, the Wolves put over half of those shots on frame with six. Alyssa Ortega, who had the game winning goal in Monday’s 1-0 win vs. Emmanuel, ripped off five shots in the contest for Newberry, two of which were on goal. Morgan Powers and Liz Gutierrez also added two shots apiece.

Kaitlyn Paul earned her fifth win of the season as the goalkeeper for the Crusaders posting six saves in the match. It was her third clean sheet of the season.

Kodi Jean Johnson posted six saves for the Wolves in 68 minutes. Korina Martinez also tallied a save in 22 minutes played.
