NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy Eagles will travel to Laurens tonight to take on the Laurens Academy Crusaders. Both teams have a 1-4 overall record.

Last year was the first time these two varsity teams played each other, and the Eagles lost. Earlier in the season Head Coach Benji Sease said that the Crusaders were the Eagles rivals due to their short distance, but he does not think that will add pressure to tonight’s game.

“I do not think that adds any pressure, but it sure adds a lot of excitement to the game for our young men,” Sease said.

During practice this week the Eagles have been working to try and do the little things right. Sease said they have been in positions to make plays, but for one reason or another they did not get it done.

“To do what we do as a offense, we will try to be balanced, but we will take what Laurens defense will give us,” he said. “We hope to control the ball on offense. Our defensive coaches have added a few wrinkles for this week also.”

To ensure a win tonight, Sease said the players will need to come out and play with fire from the opening kickoff until the horn sounds at the end of the game.

Sease expects that the offensive line will stand out tonight, as long as they block.

“Our offensive line, if they can block for our skill players, like Tabb French, Daniel Bannister, Tyrese Taylor, Landen York and Dillon Morris,” Sease said.

No matter who wins tonight, Sease knows it will be a hard fought close game.

“Even though we lost last week, for the most part we played hard. I want to see if we have learned from our mistakes and are ready to take the next step to possibly win a game,” Sease said.

Tonight’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Laurens.
