NEWBERRY — Raleigh Yeldell’s game-winning 4-yard scoring run with just over a minute remaining at North Greenville was named D2 Football Play of the Week by HERO Sports.

Yeldell broke tackles from two North Greenville defenders, including the Crusaders’ all-time leading tackler Sam Houston, before diving across the goal line to tie the game at 28. Shea Rodgers added the crucial extra point to lift Newberry to victory.

The play was one of seven nominees for D2 Play of the Week and garnered over 42 percent of the fan vote. Yeldell surged into the lead soon after news of the play’s nomination broke on social media and never relinquished it, collecting 214 of the 504 total votes cast.

Yeldell’s honor gives Newberry its second major accomplishment in the national media this season. Markell Castle’s leaping, one-handed catch reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr.’s famous grab for the New York Giants two seasons ago earned recognition on ESPN. The play earned the No. 2 spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 after the first game of the season.
