WINGATE, N.C. — The Wolves (3-4, 1-3) were defeated by #9 ranked Wingate (6-0, 4-0) on Saturday night by a final of 3-0.
Wingate is ranked #9 in all of Division II men’s soccer, and were the SAC Champions in 2015.
Jon Ander put the Bulldogs on the board in the 11th minute on a strike from the top of the box. In a game that brought 42 fouls between the two teams, one of them became crucial in the 15th minute as Callum Ross connected on a penalty kick to put Wingate up 2-0.
“Obviously Wingate is very good team being ranked #9, but we didn’t help our cause with some of our bad giveaways. It led to a lot of opportunities for them,” said head coach Bryce Cooper.
The Wolves’ had plenty of chances all night long to close the gap, but they were snuffed out by the Wingate defense who only allowed 3 shots all night. Fabrizio Bucco had the best chance to get the Wolves’ on the board in the 83rd minute as he found himself alone behind the Bulldog defense, but the shot landed right into the lap of goalkeeper Pablo Jara.
“We showed a lot of heart and pride to fight our way back, but we put ourselves in a whole we couldn’t get out of. We will learn from it and get ready for Wednesday’s match against Southern Wesleyan,” said Cooper.
Wingate added their third goal in the 60th minute on an acrobatic flying header from Elma N’For. The ball came off a free kick from teammate Jon Ander who recorded an assist on the play.
Newberry goalkeeper Brad Dixon added nine saves in the match, after he recorded his first clean sheet on the season in Wednesday’s 2-0 win vs. Coker. Dixon leads all of the SAC in saves with 51, and ranks 4th with a save percentage of .797.
The Wolves will travel to Southern Wesleyan for their next match on Sept. 28.
