WINGATE, N.C. — Newberry’s late push wasn’t enough as the Wolves (2-6, 1-3) were outlasted 2-1 at Wingate (4-3-1, 2-2) in double overtime.

In the 87th minute, a free kick towards the box from Marissa Reyna gave the Wolves’ a chance at the equalizer, as a foul in the box was called on the Bulldog defense. Sophomore Sara Silvestro lined up for the penalty kick for Newberry.

Silvestro, who came off a two assist game on Wednesday vs. Coker in their 5-0 win, drilled a ball just above the outreaching hands of Wingate goalkeeper Alexis Jones to tie the game at one. A hungry Wolves’ team seemed to have the momentum going into the extra period.

Taylor Krakower put in the golden goal in the 106th minute on a ball that barely trickled its way over the line. Krakower was assisted by Kaitlyn Fletcher who scored the first goal in the match for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs tallied the first goal with seven minutes remaining in the first half. After a well-placed pass from Kaitlyn Brunworth, Fletcher outran the Wolves’ defense for her first goal of the season, as she put the ball over the shoulder of Newberry goalkeeper Korina Martinez from the right of the box.

Martinez, who came off her first win of the season in Wednesday’s match vs. Coker, recorded 15 saves in goal including a stellar charging save on Taylor Leyble just minutes into the second half.

Alyssa Ortega and Sara Silvestro had two shots a piece for a Newberry team who was outshot 30-9 by Wingate.

In the second overtime, Martinez also made highlight real back to back saves on a header in the box from Leyble and a rebound shot from Krakower.

The Wolves’ will look to rebound as they play at home Sept. 26 vs. Emmanuel.
