SPARTANBURG — Newberry opened the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule with an impressive second-place performance at the Converse Fall Invitational by Founders Federal Credit Union, led by sophomore Nabila Inak’s sixth-place finish.
Inak was 11-over for the tournament, nine shots back of individual medalist Franzi Knoetsch of USC Beaufort, and finished one stroke from inclusion on the all-tournament team. She closed out the tournament with a seven-over 79 after opening play with a first-round 76 on Monday.
Junior Karly Mims earned her seventh career top-10 finish in 20 tournaments with a ninth-place finish two shots behind Inak. She rebounded from a first-round score of 80 with a five-over 77 in the final round to vault three positions in the individual standings.
Taylor Lance and Mariam Colon finished in 12th and 15 positions, respectively, while Johana Lunackova was 23rd in her first collegiate tournament. Annabelle Dallery landed in 17th position at 22 over par competing as an individual.
USC Beaufort ran away from the field, finishing 32 strokes ahead of the Wolves at 29-over by placing all four scorers in the top seven on the leaderboard. The Wolves finished 12 strokes ahead of tournament hosts Converse, while Emmanuel, Chowan, Pfeiffer, and North Greenville rounded out the seven-team field.
The Wolves return to action Oct. 3 at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate, hosted by Lincoln Memorial University in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
