WINGATE, N.C. — Wingate (12-0, 4-0 SAC) swept the Newberry College volleyball team (4-8, 1-3 SAC) in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) at Cuddy Arena on Tuesday night.

Senior middle blocker Madison Darby-McClure led the way for the Wolves with a match-high 13 kills on the night for a .308 attack percentage. Toni-Anne Whitlow and Sidra Triplett each tallied six kills for Newberry. Maggie Marsh dished out 28 assists and Kensley Jordan accumulated 12 digs.

Darby-McClure led the Wolves with five kills in the first set. Newberry tied the set at 7-7 and led 10-8 before Wingate used a 12-3 run to lead 20-13. The Wolves battled back and pulled within four points before the Bulldogs won the set, 25-20.

Wingate gained control early in the second set. Newberry would not go away quietly and pulled within one at 17-16. The Bulldogs went on to win set number two, 25-20.

The third set was the best that the Wolves played all night against Wingate. There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the final frame as Newberry was resilient. Newberry pulled within one at 22-21 before the Bulldogs won set number three and the match, 25-21.

Katie Bludau led Wingate with 10 kills and five block assists. Rachel Alles had 30 assists and Treslyn Ortiz had 16 digs.

Newberry continues a three game road swing against Brevard (3-6, 3-2 SAC) Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
