ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Newberry finished its first day of fall competition at one stroke under par, squarely in the hunt after 36 holes of the Jay Jennison Cup hosted by Flagler University.
The Wolves are in third place, five shots back of West Florida and three strokes behind Barry. Newberry was remarkably consistent on the day, firing a one-under 287 and an even-par 288 on the par-72 course.
Spencer Skiff leads Newberry at four strokes under par, locked in a tie for fourth place with North Georgia’s Matt Elliot. Skiff was one stroke under par in the first round before firing a three-under 69 over the final 18 holes, tying six other competitors for the second-best round of the day.
Ben Thompson was a stroke under par in 14th place, while Luke Atack and Harry Bolton finished the round tied for 30th at two over par with identical 73-73 scorecards. Evan DeGrazia was fifth for the Wolves at six over par.
Newberry sits third of a crowded 17-team field with institutions representing six states. No team was able to create significant separation, with 10 schools finishing the second round within 15 strokes of the lead. The Wolves lead Belmont Abbey by one, Keiser by two, and Georgia College and Lander by three strokes, respectively.
Lincoln Memorial, the only other South Atlantic Conference school in attendance, is in eighth place at five over par.
