WINNSBORO — Newberry Academy was handed another tough loss on Friday, this time to region rival Richard Winn Academy, 41-6.
Richard Winn set the tone early with a long touchdown pass on the opening series, taking the lead 7-0. Newberry’s offense sputtered and was forced to punt on their first possession.
Richard Winn scored again on the next series, this time on a long run, making the score 14-0 with 7:14 left in the first quarter.
Newberry came to life on offense, driving 70 yards using a nice mix of run and pass plays, capped off by a 28-yard run by Daniel Bannister. The conversion failed and the score stood at 14-6.
The Newberry defense slowed down Richard Winn on its ensuing possession, and the home team missed a field goal early in the second period. Unfortunately, Newberry did not capitalize on offense and was forced to punt.
Richard Winn connected on another long pass for a touchdown, and the score was now 21-6. Newberry put together a 70-yard drive, as quarterback Tyrese Taylor completed passes to three different receivers, including a 28-yard completion to Landen York.
The drive stalled inside the home team’s 10-yard line, and Newberry turned the ball over on downs. Richard Winn capitalized, scoring on its first play on a reverse. Newberry threatened again, but their drive ended when the first half ended with score at 28-6.
Richard Winn scored on its first two possessions of the second half, putting the game away. Newberry put together another nice drive late in the game, and Taylor connected with York for a touchdown.
Despite the score, there were some bright spots. The defense was stingy at times, but gave up too many big plays. The offense put together several long drives, but sputtered twice in the red zone and had too many three and outs.
Taylor finished with over 200 yards passing and completions to five different receivers. Bannister rushed for over 100 yards and caught several passes, adding to his offensive output. York finished with 58 yards receiving and one touchdown.
Tabb French reeled in six completions for 57 yards, and Michael Shaw had four receptions for 45 yards. Dillon Morris also had two receptions.
This week, Newberry Academy homecoming activities culminate with a game versus Charleston Collegiate on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
