NEWBERRY — Theresa Berman has been hired as the assistant women’s soccer coach for the 2015 season. Katie Sas will return to the sideline as volunteer assistant for her second season to round out the Wolves’ staff.

Berman and Sas were both women’s soccer players at Newberry College and will bring extensive tactical and technical knowledge to the Wolves.

Newberry College head women’s soccer coach is Deedee Sanguinetti.

Berman started in the Newberry midfield in the 2011 and 2012 seasons after transferring from the University of Texas-Brownsville. In her senior season, she was elected as a team captain and started all 19 games.

Following her graduation from Newberry in the spring of 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in sport management, Berman went on to play two seasons of professional soccer in Iceland.

Berman spent two years playing in the Pepsi Women’s Premier League, playing for Þróttur Reykjavík in 2013 before moving to Fjölnir in 2014. With both clubs, Berman also coached lower level and youth teams for the clubs while overcoming the language barrier. Between the two seasons, she worked as a personal trainer in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.

Sas was a four-year starter on the back line for the Wolves, including starting all 20 games in her freshman year of 2009, which ended in Newberry’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament.

Sas was elected as a captain in her junior and senior seasons and has used her experience from her time on the field to coach the defenders and goalkeepers.

She is also entering her third year of teaching third grade at Gallman Elementary School in Newberry. She works closely with the College’s RETAIN program to help teaching majors transition into the classroom teaching profession.
