Women finish 15th, men finish 14th in Furman Invitational


NEWBERRY — The Newberry College women’s cross country team placed 15 of 18 in the non D-1 school section for the 6K distance.

Newberry was led by freshman Emily Shuler in 26:47.94. She was closely followed by sophomore Michelle Ling (27:18.23) and freshman Brittani Barratt (27:42.71).

Rounding out the Wolves’ scoring was junior Rebecca Burkhart (28:51.49) and sophomore Katy Crout (29:01.47). Also competing for Newberry were sophomore Alyssa White(30:30), sophomore Hayden Francis (32:07.13) and senior Makaylyn Higgins (33:26.93).

The Newberry men’s cross country team placed 14 of 18 against non-Division 1 schools. For eight of Newberry’s 12 runners, it was their first time running the collegiate 8K distance.

Newberry was led by freshman Quinn Wilson (28:43.23), sophomore Caleb Bouwkamp (28:56.40) and junior Charlie Cook (29:07.38).

Rounding out the scoring for Newberry were freshmen Shelton Reynolds (29:2477), Jorge Hernandez (30:21.94), Mondricous Hatton (30:32.93) and sophomore Robbie Shelton (30:55.29).

Also competing were sophomore Bruce Edmonds (31:20.05), freshman Carlos Hernandez (31:57.29), senior Taylor Dennard (33:08.98) and freshman Zack Irick (37:57.40).

Newberry’s next meet will take place Sept. 27 in Rock Hill at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational. The men will again run the 8K distance, while the women will run a 5K.
