BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Newberry College volleyball team closed its weekend at the King Invitational by earning a split, as it defeated host King (3-1) before falling to Erskine (3-0) in its final match Saturday at the Student Center.
Sophomore Kensley Jordan was named to the all-tournament team.
Match 1: Newberry 3, King 1
The Newberry (2-2) won their first game on day two at the King Invitational against King (0-4) Friday morning, 3-0 (25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-16).
Logan Hayward had a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs. Maggie Marsh tallied 30 assists and Madison Darby-McClure added eight kills. Kensley Jordan had a time-high 13 digs.
Newberry got off to a quick 5-1 start and led the entire first set. Hawyard spiked home a kill to give the Wolves a 25-16 set win.
The second set was a back and forth battle and was tied at 9-9. King went on an 11-2 run to lead 20-11 and eventually won the set 25-16.
The host Tornado started off well in the third set. Newberry clawed back to tie the frame at 17-17. The teams traded points until the Wolves eked out a 25-23 set win.
In the fourth set, Newberry slowly built up an advantage. The Wolves led 10-8 before going on a 5-1 run to lead 15-9. Newberry would pull away and win the fourth set 25-16 to win the match 3-1.
As a team, the Wolves had 37 kills on 121 attempts giving them a .182 hitting percentage. The team also tallied nine total team blocks.
Match 2: Erskine 3, Newberry 0
Newberry fell short in the last match of the King Invitational, falling to Erskine 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23). The Flying Fleet won the Conference Carolinas regular season championship last season and had a 23-7 overall record.
Hayward had a match-high 14 kills. Marsh tallied 26 assists and Jordan had six digs.
In the first set, Erskine opened up a slight advantage. Newberry cut the lead down to 11-10 before the Flying Fleet won the set 25-14.
Erskine once again took control early in the second set. The Wolves battled but ultimately fell in set number two, 25-16.
The third set featured nine ties and five lead changes between the two squads. Newberry held a 23-19 lead, but Erskine fought back to claim the set and the match by a score of 25-23.
Newberry travels to Florence on Friday for the Francis Marion Tournament, where it will face Emmanuel at 4 p.m. and Barton at 8 p.m.
