NEWBERRY — Hot bats put a breeze in the air Monday as Chapin-Newberry scored 12 runs on 15 hits to defeat West Columbia at Airport High School 12-4.

The top of the first, Chapin-Newberry made it clear they were ready to play by sending six batters to the plate and scoring two runs.

West Columbia answered with a run the bottom of the first making the score 2-1.

The top of the second Chapin-Newberry responded scoring seven runs. Zack Ziesing leadoff with a single, Kevis Burton walked and Delshun Young blasted a double down the left field line to score Ziesing and moving Burton to third. Danton Hyman singled up the middle scoring Burton and Young.

Hyman moved to second on the throw to home. Peyton Spangler laced a triple into right field and scored Hyman. On the same play Spangler took home on a wild throw to third. Justin Hawkins and Ryan Stoudemire sailed two over the fence for solo-back to back homeruns making the score 9-1.

West Columbia scored one run the bottom of the second and one the bottom of the fifth and ninth.

Chapin-Newberry added a run the top of the third on hits by Young and Spangler.

Hawkins leadoff the top of the sixth inning with his second solo homerun of the game and Stoudemire followed with a double. Duncan Crotwell singled to center field and Ziesing reached first on an error scoring Stoudemire.

Burton pitched the first four innings. He struck out four, gave up two runs on four hits, and walked three. Relief pitchers were Patrick Yoder and Corey Stone.

Chapin-Newberry will be home for their next six games. They hosted Orangeburg June 16 and will host Lexington June 18. The SC/NC Challenge begins June 19 at Newberry College with two games on Friday beginning at 4:30 p.m. and four games Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Three games will be on June 21 beginning at noon and will wrap up the tournament .
