A local deputy coroner has been named as the person of the year in his field.
Newberry County Deputy Coroner John Pollard was named as the Deputy Coroner of the Year for the State of South Carolina.
The award was made at the S.C. Coroner’s Association Training Conference in Litchfield Beach on Wednesday.
Pollard says the award was unexpected.
“I did not expect to get nominated or get the award,” said Pollard, who has been a deputy coroner since January of 2009.
“John is the epitome of what a deputy coroner should be. He is a man of integrity, honesty, and conviction. He is very much deserving of this high honor. I am blessed to have him on my staff, ” said Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton.
Pollard, who is one of over 250 deputy coroners in the state, was cited for his dedication, loyalty and commitment to the coroner’s profession.
Pollard, who is a Vietnam War veteran, serves as the vice president for the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association and is an active member of the Silverstreet Fire Department. Pollard has also been active with the the Newberry County Board of Rural Fire Control, local firemen’s association and the S.C. Coroners Association.
This is the third statewide award the Newberry Coroners Office has won in the past four years.
In 2009, Coroner Newton was named the Sue Townsend Coroner of the Year and in 2010, Chief Deputy Coroner Lewis Lee was named deputy coroner of the year.
“It is a great honor for this Office and Newberry County to be recognized for our efforts on a State level for the last few years,” said Newton.
Pollard is the father of Kim Pollard and lives in the Silverstreet community.
