Newberry Rotarian Rita Yarbrough was able to show off highlights from her Thailand trip at Friday’s Rotary meeting.
Yarbrough visited Bangkok, Thailand for the Rotary International convention this year and she says it was one of the larger conventions with more than 35,000 people in attendance.
She explains that this was more than last year’s in New Orleans where there were only abut 15,000 people.
While Yarbrough did attend the convention for Rotary reasons, she was still able to sight see and visit with a former ambassadorial scholar who visited Newberry and stayed with Yarbrough last year.
Yupapone Vorapongsukonth and her family welcomed Yarbrough and showed them around many of the sights.
One tidbit that Yarbrough mentioned to the service club was the fact that Vorapongsukonth had just bought a house and she was able to witness the dedication in which nine Buddhist monks blessed it.
She also pointed out that there were no closets or storage, a fact which she found interesting.
Upon Yarbrough’s adventures, she noticed that there were plenty of flowers and candles laid out like memorials everywhere. However, it should be noted that these were not memorials. They just seemed to be everywhere around the country, Yarbrough observed.
While she was at the convention, she did plenty of flag swapping in which she swapped Newberry’s Rotary flags with other Rotary clubs. In fact, she gave the Bangkok flag to the Newberry club.
Another enjoyable aspect was the tiger temple in which Yarbrough was able to walk with tigers.
Yarbrough says that she enjoyed her trip and while she won’t go to next year’s convention, she is looking forward to the one after that.
The next convention is to be held in Portugal in June 2013.
