Officials give back on Friday night
by Cindy Pitts
Senior Reporter

The officials at the local high school football games on Friday donated their pay to charity.

Those working the Newberry game once again gave their pay to Hospice of Laurens County in memory of Sam Owens, who was an official.

Also at the Newberry game, Sam Owen’s brother Truman Owens was honored for his retirement from being an official as he ruled over one of his last games at Newberry High.

The Clinton resident was also recently inducted in the National High School Hall of Fame.

At Whitmire the officials donated their money to the Chris McKee Scholarship Fund. McKee played for Whitmire and died several years ago in an automobile wreck.

McKee was also inducted into the Whitmire Hall of Fame on Friday evening.

It has become a tradition over the past several years for the officials at the first home games of the season for each of the schools to donate their pay to charity.

Also many of the officials at the games are local men, who knew the two men being honored.

Memorial Day is a unique national holiday. If not the most important day of patriotic observance, it can certainly be argued as the most solemn day we set aside for recognition. This is a day of personal sorrow for those who have lost loved ones in uniform. But it is also a day for the nation ...

Little Mountain Boy Scout Troop 61, sponsored by the Ruritan Club, is proud to announce that Michael Allen Morris completed his Board of Review on Dec. 12, and has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Morris’ rank advancement was celebrated by family, friends and fellow Scouts at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on April 143 at Macedonia Church. Michael is the 16 year old son of Kathy and Terry Morris of Prosperity and has been a member of Troop 61 since 2007. 2012 was the 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Scout and a special Eagle Rank was presented to Michael to commemorate this benchmark. Michael will be attending the National Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Scouting Reserve in West Virginia in July along with 2 other scouts from Troop 61. For his Eagle Scout service project, Michael provided the leadership for, planned, secured funds for and organized the replacement of decorative landscaping at the Ruritan Building in Little Mountain. Pictured with Michael and his parents are Billy Lindler, Scoutmaster; Chad Morris, Andy Senn, Jeff Waters, Jeff Murray, Assistant Scoutmasters, and James Torrence, Committee Chairman.
