NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves piled up 565 yards of offense on the way to a emphatic 47-22 victory over Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference action at Setzler Field on Saturday night.
Newberry is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC and will play at Mars Hill next Saturday. Carson-Newman is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play entering a nationally-televised home game against Wingate on Thursday night. Newberry is noe the only undefeated team remaining in NCAA Division II’s Super Region Two.
Newberry rushed for 335 yards on 48 carries with four players notching over 70 yards. Quarterback W.T. Murden (West Columbia) completed 17-of-26 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns and had six carries for 76 yards. He was not sacked, as the Wolves’ offensive line has allowed only five sacks in the last 16 games dating back to 2010.
Daniel Foster (Lancaster) and B.J. Mazyck (Ridgeville) had nine tackles each, while Apollo Stretch (Columbia) had seven stops with three tackles for loss and a sack. The Wolves sacked C-N quarterbacks five times and limited the Eagles to 258 yards rushing, after C-N brought a 392 yards-per-game rushing average into the contest.
The 47 points is the most scored by Newberry against Carson-Newman in the 47 meetings between the two teams and also the first time the scarlet and gray have cracked the 40-point barrier against the Eagles in a series dating back to 1940. This is also the first time Newberry has defeated Carson-Newman in consecutive seasons since 1987 and 1988, and the only time since the schools joined NCAA Division II.
C-N appeared to be on track for another big offensive game early, when Solomon Duanah took the second play of the game up the middle for an 84-yard touchdown. The teams traded punts and a 41-yard Dureal Elmore (Abbeville) carry set the Wolves up in the red zone, where Murden completed his first touchdown pass of the night from 7 yards out to tie the game. A Carson-Newman punt pinned Newberry inside its own 3-yardline and the Eagles blocked the ensuing punt, which was batted out of the endzone for a 9-7 C-N lead.
A Curt Duncan field goal from 35 yards out with two seconds left on the first quarter clock gave the guests a 12-7 lead after the opening period.
The Wolves took the opening drive of the second quarter 75 yards in 10 plays, with Murden finding tight end Ozzie Exume (Lawrenceville, Ga.) for a 21-yard touchdown pass to take the lead for good at 14-12. A John Gadson (North Charleston) 11-yard touchdown carry made it a 21-12 lead.
Carson-Newman got the ball with 51 seconds left in the half but went three-and-out with Alstevis Squirewell (Great Falls) making a sack. Newberry had 26 seconds and a 41-yard completion to Jake Brown (Dacula, Ga.) and a 22-yard completion to Corey Washington (North Charleston) setup a 1-yard Elmore touchdown carry with under a second on the clock in the half to take a 28-12 lead into the locker room.
A Duncan 43-yard field goal cut the Eagles’ deficit to 28-15, but the Wolves responded on the next drive with a 32-yard field goal from Kyle Mackey (New Ellenton) to push the lead back to 16 points at 31-15.
Jamal Bethune (Gable) made a sack in the end zone on C-N’s first drive of the fourth quarter to make it 33-15 in the Wolves’ favor and Newberry needed just four plays to go 64 yards with Murden’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Byron Dickerson (Atlanta, Ga.) putting the game out of reach.
Newberry put its final score on the board with backup quarterback Michael Rentz (Charleston) at the helm and an 11-yard touchdown carry from Wesley Brown (John’s Island) capped Newberry’s scoring on the night.
C-N third string signal caller David Freeman touched the ball once on the night and carried it 69 yards for a score to make the final margin 47-22.
Four Wolves had over 70 yards rushing with Gadson earning 92 yards on 11 carries, Elmore getting 88 yards on nine carries, Murden getting 76 yards on six carries and Wesley Brown getting 73 yards on 12 carries.
