NEWBERRY — Social and economic challenges will be discussed in the fourth session of the Cultivating Community forum brought by Charles Weathers.
Weathers comes back to Newberry on May 21 for a community forum on organizational sustainability which will allow people to engage in discussions about building up the county better for a long-term impact.
Weathers will speak at Community Hall from 9:30 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. He encourages everyone to talk and come up with strategies about local leadership and sustaining the community. This is an interactive forum.
“Community is more a sense of belonging than a physical space so it’s important that local leaders understand how to maximize their community engagement efforts,” said Weathers. “We work, live and worship within the same proximity — why not come together to have a conversation on how to more effectively advance the common good together.”
The lead sponsor of the event is the Newberry County Coalition on Underage Drinking and this is their gift to the community for the fourth time. What started as one initial session turned into multiple ones as Weathers was impressed with the interactiveness of the community.
“We recognized that in order to address substance abuse there are other concerns that must be dealt with as well,” said Tom Perry, CAST coordinator at Westview Behavioral Health Services. “Issues such as teen pregnancy, substance abuse, domestic violence and unemployment all have an impact on each other so they can’t be fixed in a vacuum.”
While this is a free event, people are encouraged to call ahead and RSVP because of limited space. Perry also said if people cannot stay the entire time, they can come in the morning or the afternoon.
Email Perry at tperry@westviewbehavioral.org or call at 276-5690 by Friday to RSVP.
