All three Newberry County public high schools showed a decrease in their average SAT scores for 2012.
The SAT is a standardized reasoning test that is partly used as a measure for seniors to get into college. The results are from the graduating seniors from last year and the results show that in all three subject areas — critical reading, math and writing — numbers decreased.
Newberry County was not alone in their decrease as the state and nation also decreased overall in SAT mean scores.
For the district overall, the number of test takers rose by two from 142 to 144 from 2011 to 2012.
This increase happened because more seniors from Whitmire took the SAT. Mid-Carolina and Newberry both had drops in test takers. The drop was only a couple of test takers per school.
Whitmire’s jump in test takers went from 14 in 2011 to 20 in 2012 which is an increase of six.
More than half of Whitmire’s seniors took the SAT with 61 percent. Mid-Carolina only had 45 percent and Newberry only had 35 percent of their seniors take the college prep test.
The average composite scores for the overall district dropped from 1395 in 2011 to 1344 in 2012.
The maximum score if 2400 with each section worth 800 points each.
As for the three subject areas, reading and writing were overall the lowest with math being the highest.
This is actually typical of the SAT test takers for 2012 on a state wide level. The writing area had the lowest scores across the state as well as on a local level.
