NEWBERRY — Getting “down and dirty” with nature, Annette Davis, district/education coordinator for the Newberry Soil and Water Conservation District, will host the annual Camp Conservation for children this summer.
Established in 2001, Camp Conservation is a natural resources conservation, agricultural/environmental day camp for children ages 9-12. The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 8 through July 11 in Lynch’s Woods Park on S.C. 76, behind the old Piedmont Technical College.
The topics studied during the camp will include Keep Newberry County Beautiful; people, plants, animals; wildlife and habitat; reduce, reuse & recycle - anti litter; soil, water and air quality; solar energy; trail hikes; agriculture, farming and food production; aerial mapping; and stream exploration
“Camp conservation is a unique opportunity for the children to get outside and truly experience learning about nature through a hands-on educational classroom taught by a diversity of professionals,” Davis said.
Davis said her passion for starting Camp Conservation goes back to her childhood years of loving the outdoors and learning about the earth whether it be plundering through the woods, or talking with her dad, great-uncle and grandfathers.
“Today’s children are found inside playing computer games, on the couch with their TV blasting away, or in their rooms listening to music,” Davis said.
That is one of the many reasons she hopes children will enjoy Camp Conservation and learn more about their environment, and other things we might take for granted.
The price for the four-day camp is $75 per person. The deadline to register is June 17 and registration will be limited to the first 45 paid campers.
