Wolves tabbed third in SAC poll

The Newberry Wolves have been tabbed to picked to finish third in the 2012 South Atlantic Conference football standings, as the league office announced the results of the annual coaches’ poll today.

Newberry and Wingate each received 33 points with one first place vote each to tie for third in the annual poll, just two points out of second place in the poll. Both squads finished with 4-3 conference records in the 2011 season.

The Wolves and Bulldogs will face off on Oct. 13 in Newberry’s homecoming game. Newberry returns four 2011 all-SAC picks to its 2012 roster, while Wingate returns three. The 2012 preseason all-SAC listing will be released Tuesday.

Defending league co-champion Lenoir-Rhyne is the SAC preseason favorite with 46 points, including four of the eight first-place votes. The Bears went 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the SAC last season, splitting the league title with Mars Hill.

The 2011 SAC co-champion Mars Hill is second in the 2012 preseason poll with 35 points and two first-place votes.

Following Newberry and Wingate in the third place tie is Carson-Newman in fifth place with 26 points. C-N will be looking to rebound from its first sub-.500 SAC record since 1985.

Tusculum is no. 6 in the preseason poll with 24 points. Rounding out the poll is Catawba at No. 7 with 18 points and Brevard at No. 8 with nine points.

The Wolves begin preseason practices this week in preparation for the Sept. 1 season opener against Elizabeth City State in the first of four consecutive home games to start the slate.

Tickets can be purchased at 321-5101 or by emailing tickets@newberry.edu.

Flimsy buildings waste tax dollars
Why do people keep rebuilding in ways that are unsubstantial and why are no requirements for safe buildings enforced? In known danger areas the same flimsy structures are rebuilt at tax payer expense. Jim Livingston
