High school meet for jamboree
by Wilson Senn
For The Observer

All three of the county high school football teams saw action on Friday night at the annual Newberry Jamboree. During the event each team played two quarters for 24 mintue games.

Dreher 36, Whitmire 0

Whitmire garnered two first downs and a total of nine yards offensively, including one yard on the ground, as Dreher scored on all but one of their seven possessions in their 36-0 victory.

After the Wolverines went on a three-and-out to start their half of play, the Blue Devils never saw the second down marker as their five play, 60 yard drive ended with a three-yard run by Keenan Leonard.

Dreher’s other rushing scores came from a yard out two different times as well as a 33 yard carry.

The Blue Devils scored through the air from 20 yards out and scored a safety as Dreher converted 4-of-5 PAT attempts.

Alex Ellison provided highlights for Whitmire on both sides of the ball as he had two fumble recoveries and rushed the ball three times for nine yards.

Dreher completed six-of-eight passes for 134 yards while getting 136 yards on 13 carries.

Austin Jenkins went 1-of-7 on passing for eight yards for the Wolverines.

Whitmire opens its season next Friday with the hosting of Great Falls.

A.C. Flora 30, Mid-Carolina 7

Coming off a season-ending leg injury during the Newberry game last year, Nick Sims-Metts returned to fine form as he had 75 yards of total offensive yardage, including 46 yards on three carries, as the senior scored Mid-Carolina’s lone touchdown on the evening from four yards out in their 30-7 loss to the Falcons.

A.C. Flora was the only team to score a touchdown on the first possession of the game.

Under the direction of Matthew Hawkins, the Rebels never saw the third down marker on this eight play drive as Sims-Metts scored with a carry up the middle.

Dillon Pelton provided the extra point for Mid-Carolina.

The Falcons scored on all five of its offensive possessions on the evening.

A.C. Flora rushed the ball 24 times for 205 yards while completing 4-of-five passes for 60 yards.

Mid-Carolina accumulated 66 yards on 10 carries while Hawkins went 4-of-five on passing for 60 yards.

The Rebels will open its 2012 season this Friday with a trip to Hartsville.

Newberry 20, Woodruff 0

Unless the Bulldogs won over Woodruff in a jamboree in this time frame, the last time Newberry High defeated the Wolverines was during the 1975 regular season.

Woodruff had 13 of its starters suspended for the jamboree due to the violation of team rules but as the old saying goes,’ the show must go on’.

The Wolverines left a bad taste in the Bulldogs’ mouths last year with their only home loss and knocking them out of the playoffs in the second round.

Newberry only needed four plays to cover the required 41 yards as Tyon Williams scored his first of two touchdowns on the evening from 44 yards out.

Williams’ other touchdown came from six yards out with 10:19 left in the 2012 jamboree.

Jose Lozano converted both of his extra point attempts as well as making field goals from 22 and 24 yards out.

Woodruff rushed the ball 10 times for 48 yards while five-of-14 pass attempts were caught for a total of 28 yards.

Jack Huggins went 0-for-7 on pass attempts but Newberry’s 24 carries garnered 194 yards.

Williams had 10 rushes for 99 yards in the jamboree.

After participation in this Friday’s Greenwood Jamboree, the Bulldogs return to Mike Ware Field next Friday as Ware Shoals will be making its first trip to Newberry since 1948.
