NEWBERRY — Tammy Folk loves her job as a groomer and pet store owner.
The owner and groomer of Pet Styles on Main in downtown Newberry has just expanded into a larger space next door to her old store. She attributes her success to her clients.
“I have wonderful clients, amazing clients who are supportive,” said Folk. “One brought me all new towels.”
Another client paints pictures of animals and will paint any size canvas of someone’s pet. “Just ask and she’ll paint a picture for you,” Folk said.
Folk has another client who is also Folk’s right handed friend. Teri Murdock said she has been a client since Folk first started her business. Kim Sligh also helps out with bathing the pets.
“I love my business. I love coming to work every day,” said Folk. “God has blessed me with an opportunity to go bigger.”
Her new space just opened May 3.
“I’ve wants to expand for a couple of years but was just too scared to take the chance,” Folk said. “I started praying and with God’s blessings, the support and help of my husband, Robert and my good friends, Teri and Kim the decision was made a month ago to move into a bigger place and start some retail for pets. The second person I called after making the arrangements to move (after my husband) was my preacher, Jeff O’dell to ask him to come and say a prayer over my new business.”
With faith in God and support of her clients, Folk expanded. She said she is beyond excited considering the first few months in her old location were a bit rough.
In her new store, the front half will be retail and the back is where she will take care of the animals. However, in the front window, Folk said she will have a small playpen for animals to play and hopefully engage those who pass by.
Folk said she will have vitamins for dogs and cats, shampoos, lupine collars and leashes and even made-to-order dog jackets.
Folk said she is a huge advocate of vitamins for animals and also makes her own natural dog treats that have no additives, preservatives or food dyes.
While Folk is passionate about caring for dogs and cats, her passion is backed by knowledge as well. She is certified through Groom a Dog Academy in Georgia.
“My sister told me I was a half dog one time and I considered that a compliment,” Folk said.
While Folk mainly cares for dogs, she also takes care of cats, guinea pigs and a rabbit.
“Basically, it’s because I love dogs,” said Folk about her business succeeding. “I know that with God’s blessing and my wonderful clients’ support and my family’s belief in me, Pet Styles will continue to grow and now we have the space to do so.”
