NEWBERRY — In heartbreaking fashion, the Newberry men’s tennis team fell 5-4 to the visiting Anderson Trojans in the Wolves’ home and conference opener on Monday at the Cannon Tennis Courts.

Newberry (1-3, 0-1 SAC) looked to control the momentum in doubles action as the Wolves picked up a pair of points in the early part of the afternoon as senior Cal Loveridge and sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles, while freshman Fernando Espana and junior David Sons picked up a win with the same score at No. 3.

The Wolves lone doubles loss came at No. 1 doubles as Anderson’s (2-2, 2-0 SAC) top pair earned a tie-break victory over juniors Michael Saunders and Vinicius Botelho.

Newberry was unable to get things done in singles action, as the Wolves picked up only two victories atop the singles lineup. Saunders picked up a straight sets win at No. 1, while Botelho earned a two-set victory as well at No. 2.

The Wolves return to the Cannon Tennis Courts on Wednesday as Newberry hosts Erskine at 2:30 p.m.
