SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - The Newberry College men’s golf team shot its lowest team round in over two years at 6-under par 282 to sit in second place after the first round at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Monday. All five Wolves shot par or better and are in the top 20 individually.
Newberry is two strokes behind Mount Olive College (-8, 280) entering Tuesday’s final round. The top seven teams are within eight strokes of the lead.
The Wolves are led by Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.), who is tied for second with a 3-under par 69. He is one stroke behind Barton’s Daniel Claytor, who leads the event at 4-under par 68.
Just behind Gruenemeier is Ewen Donaldson (Edinburgh, Scotland), who is tied for sixth at 2-under par 70. Jon Weiss (Sumter) is tied for 15th at 1-under par 71 and Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) and Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) are tied for 20th at even par 72.
Weiss recorded one of seven eagles on the day and Gruenemeier leads the tournament with six birdies. Weiss and Truax are amongst the tournament’s most consistent players with 14 pars on the day.
