WHITMIRE — Work is starting on the new home for the Whitmire EMS and Rescue Squad which is starting and will give the old Whitmire Amory a new look.

Bids were awarded last week to Pickens Roofing and Sheet Metals for a new roof on the building.

Pickens was the lowest of 11 companies bidding on the project with a membrane roofing bid of $112,750 and a metal roofing bid of $148,500.

Bids for the membrane roofing ranged up to $198,360.

As investigations into the state of the roof started it was determined that none of the current roof could be salvaged and the roof must be taken down to the studs.

Also the work calls for a tapper or slope to be put into the roof to help water drain off better.

The initial estimate for the roof work was set at $100,000 but due to the bad shape of the roof it required more work at a higher cost.

The building is being remodeled into the new station as part of the county’s penny sales tax for capital improvements.
